The Pillars of the Earth

The great master of action and suspense narrative takes us back to the Middle Ages, a fascinating world of kings, queens, knights, feudal battles, castles and walled cities. Love and death intertwine in this masterful tapestry vibrantly centered on the construction of a Gothic cathedral. The story begins with the public hanging of an innocent man and ends with the humiliation of a king. The Pillars of the Earth is Ken Follett's masterpiece and is a unique evocation of an era of violent passions. ................................................ ................... This great work of Ken Follet was revolutionary because it was his readers accustomed to his trills and back in 1989 surprised everyone by presenting this historical novel. The story revolves around the construction of the Gothic cathedral of Kingsbridge during the SXII. Its construction is an excuse to present several parallel plots that tell the lives of diverse characters whose lives intersect over the whole book. The characters that appear are quite varied: a constructor method and practice, a devout monk, a bishop without scruples, two brothers stripped of their county, a noble despot, an incompetent ruler, a woman witch ... And so many of them. This is a story full of love, hate, revenge, political intrigue, envy, lust, power, ambition, obsession and madness, where medieval society is brilliantly reflected throughout its many pages. It gives us a very good acercamien to the way of life in all social strata SXII: the peasants, merchants and artisans, nobles, and finally the clergy. Over the charismatic characters we see the corruption and cruelty of society. To be set during a time of great political instability are described periods of development, famine, battles ... Variety is one of the strengths of this book. Another feature of the work is the abundance of architectural descriptions so that is not interested in art or construction can be extremely boring these passages. Anyway, reading is very entertaining and enjoyable as a good best seller. A Masterpiece!
