often considered the first modern novel, Don Quixote was originally conceived as a comic satire of chivalrous romances. However, Cervantes never destroyed the ideal of chivalry romances, transformed. His work was often seen as a veiled attack on the Catholic Church and contemporary English politics. Don Quixote has suffered, like any classic, all kinds of interpretations and criticisms.
